- One thing I was very surprised at the 3rd Int'l conference on CD ROM was there
- were so many developers that gave me samples of their CD ROM's and later I
- found out that it is very inexpensive to press discs in U.S. When you have
- some maufactures to master and press CD ROM discs, roughly speaking, it will
- cost us about 8000 dollars. I does not change much even if we ask 100 or 200
- discs. It may take 2 or 3 weeks to be delivered. There's a express service(I
- think one week or so) but it cost much more. I wonder exactly how much do you
- pay for mastering and pressing discs. Is it cheaper, then, to send MT from
- Japan to U.S. and have them matering and pressing and delivered? By the way, I
- forgot to mention that 8000 dollars refer to the price in Japan ------- Noboru

- The CDs are standardized to the point the any CD will run on any CD drive.
- Some of them (the ones mastered in the High Sierra format) do appear as DOS
- files in a DOS environment, but for most of them, you need whatever retrieval
- software that was written for the package. As far as taking them from one
- operating system to another, can you do that with many software formats? I
- don't have much experience outside of the MS/PC-DOS world, but I'm fairly
- certain that I couldn't take my database or spreadsheet files to another
- operating system. I believe each package needs to be developed for each
- operating s system that the publishers want to reach. My company sells a full
- range of optical drives and software for the MS/PC-DOS environment, and will
- sell to any operating that we can as soon as the products are available. Bob

- Mark, I think you have a good idea. There will (actually, is, since some
- companies such as ours are digitizing video and audio) be a community of users
- who will want to discuss the latest technology, along with known pitfalls, in
- the area of analog to digital conversion. Under the current arrangement of the
- forum, the most appropriate place for such a discussion would be data

- would certainly be appropriate to initiate a new section for that (sub)topic.

- I don't think CD-ROM is the answer to your problems. MS-DOS can receive and
- store more than 32 megs, just not on one disk partition. It should be possible
- to get a large hard disk with partitioning software, so in effect you have many
- 32meg hard disks. Then you will need to write/modify your tp software on the
- compac to create a new file on a new disk after each 32 megs is received.
- CD-ROM is read only, so it won't fix the problem. WORM disks would hold your
- data, but if you transfer it often you'll be buying a lot of cartridges.
- Without all the facts, it seems that the best answer might be to let you're
- 4341's receive the data directly. In any case, good luck with your project.

- not find it very helpful, however, in dealing with some of the minor questions:
- how much memory I would need, exactly what the DOS Extensions were, could I
- operate a 110 volts machine here in Norway with a transformer? etc. What would
- be useful would be more articles which deal with the practical problems
- confronted by the prospective buyer, who has little interest in the technical
- problems.
-
- I am wondering now to what extent the results of your work will appear here on
- this forum.

- Oslo, Norway. I have just learned of this forum as a result of an inquiry to
- Easyplex. Glad to see it. I have just acquired a HITACHI player and two
- programs, BOOKSHELF and GROLIERS. I am a writer, mainly on foreign policy and
- military matters. I am, therefore, looking forward to discs which provide the
- kind of information I now get by going online, particularly newspapers and
- other publications.
-
- Since I use TAPCIS, the introduction to the forum scrolled by very quickly.
- Could someone tell me who the SYSOP is and what the aims of the forum are?
-
- John Craft spoke of his store. What is this? Who else on the forum is selling
- discs?

- Oslo, Norway. I have downloaded the file MSGLD.PR about the CDROM SAMPLER. I
- do not, however, have access to a 800 number from here. If Jack Ryan or
- someone else connected with this disc reads this message, I would be glad to
- have a copy. I am in touch here through a bulletin board with a number of
- people interested in CDROM. My address is Sondreveien 4, 0378 Oslo 3, Norway.
- Many thanks.
